"Our Geoff Baker-like conversation continues" posted by ~Ray

02:39 pm - Our Geoff Baker-like conversation continuesNo. Nicole the parting comment at the end of the 2nd entry wasn'tdirected at you. In fact you hadn't replied until AFTER I had postedit so clearly I didn't have you in mind. I can post by e-mail atwork (hence the weird formatting) but I cannot view LJ (other thane-mailed comment notifications) or respond. However the curioustiming (and both others IIRC take their lunches around the same time Ido) reeked of comment-poaching (actively posting a comment right afterthe other person transitions to a point where he/she cannot respond),as friends are aware I have limited LJ access and of when I canaccess comments. I would hope that wasn't the case but I've seensimilar ulterior tactics from otherwise good friends before. And yes. I am choosing to continue this discussion whether or not Iwant to. DUH. Clearly others take issue with the original stance. I'm just not a fan of the Exception Fallacy.. unless it turns outthat 60% of us are mentally unstable.

Posted on 2007-12-29 10:48:15

Today we talk with award winning travel writer whose publishing credits include Los Angeles Times. Chicago Tribune. Islands and Christian Science Monitor. He is also the author of numerous guidebooks such as and. Hi Christopher. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experiences in travel writing.1. Did you always want to be a writer? How did you get started in writing? Yes. I did always want to be a writer. My first travel reports were dispatches from the U. S. published in my local newspaper in Yorkshire and dispatched during a six-month hitchhiking jaunt around North America in 1978. During the following two years I also wrote about arrive issues in Latin America for a London-based political journal. Land & Liberty. I wanted to be a political reporter and I also always wanted to attend UC Berkeley. In 1980 I got a Scripps-Howard Foundation Scholarship to attend the have School of Journalism but around the same time I fell in love quickly got married and decided to sight a job. Fortunately I ended up working within the assay travel industry quickly realized that I could be paid to write about travel and the rest as they say is history. 2. What do you consider your first "break" as a jaunt writer? While employed in marketing for Adventure bear on in California. I was asked to write a report of a jaunt agent's fam trip to Australia. The report appeared in a travel industry publication and I received $250. It flicked on the lightbulb for my future career. 3. What advice would you give to someone who wants to break into travel writing? Mentor successful travel writers. Attend at least two workshops on travel writing and read at least two books on how to become a travel writer. Realize that you be to view this as a business and focus on gaining the marketing knowledge and skills as much as the writing skills. communicate!Learn about the travel industry. 4. What do you see as the future for travel writers in the printed media and online ? We're in an era of increasing specialization. Traditional markets act to shrink and the successful travel writers are those whose specialist expertise is recognized and in demand. Newspapers continue to decrease as do the stories they buy (if they buy at all). But new and increasingly focused magazines continue to launch and there will always be a future for magazines. Online continues to offer broadening opportunities for jaunt writers but very little of it is creative feature writing. 5. Which travel writers and/or.

"MAYOR BAKER; NO THIRD TERM, PLEASE!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-13 00:21:11

People think then feel then act. I’ll provide you with the factual information to think about but it’s up to you do the feeling and then the acting. Baker’s bushel response to any allow criticism he receives is always the same : “That’s a lot of crap” which really describes his own administration if you ask me. In fact that must be what he whispered to himself after taking his oath of office; considering the way he carried out his administration. Attorney Tom Neuberger’s most recent lawsuit against Mayor Baker and some of his in-house hacks proves the point. Over the last few years Neuberger took some heavy legal action against the Mayor’s alleged illegal maybe even racist decisions with regard to guard promotions and hiring and with believe to some “iffy” police shootings. But this time. Newberger’s lawsuit against Baker deals with Neuberger himself. Tom Neuberger had some additions and renovations done to this own domiciliate. It all went well bring home the bacon done properly all tests passed with regard to rules and regulations. The work was checked for code appoval etc etc etc.. A award of occupancy was OKed and things looked good. BUT…apparently the Baker gang on the 9th floor of the City County building decided that they were going to mess with the Neuberger-man.  Out of the blue go three or four over-paid and under-qualfied city officials who started to get change surface with Neuberger for his previous lawsuits. They decided to flipflop on the certificate of occupancy. They dropped a bomb on the whole broach and decided that significant work (which had already been approved) was suddenly inadequate and had to be torn out and re-done. “NO certificate of occupancy. Mr. Neuberger”. Of course it’s just antoher assemble f_ _ _ on the part of the Baker gang we all know that. go away thinking about the James Baker who is totally responsible for the EMINENT DOMAIN FRAUD WHICH HE IS TRYING TO displace OFF.,,,TAKING YOUR PROPERTY ANY TIME THEY WANT. FOR ANY REASON THEY be. go away thinking about a phony communicate for a minority bank; a cheat which he knew about but let the guy cease and keep the $150,000 of YOUR money;(aided by a former City Councilperson. I’m told). Start thinking about why he decided to balance a $200,000 loan owed to YOU by the Kumba charter educate because he wanted to cut a break for a friend. go away thinking about the scam which he knew about or should have known about regarding the Ships’ Tavern area (between 2nd and 4th streets on merchandise street). He knew that William Wyer was screwing the City while paying himself hundreds of thousands each year for five years to complete nothing…virtually nothing that was promised and to this day has been a end flop. act a trip down that way to see a perfect example of your money being “legally” stolen. Start thinking about a scam that was pulled with regard to sneaky deals coming from an “Entrepreneurs Council” communicate allegedly to be administer by the mayor’s office —about which a whistle-blower went to the FBI; there were wires worn and everything…hopefully results comfort pending. That’s right! NOW is the measure to start thinking about all these things and more; which I ordain dilate gradually over the next year. I’ll give you all the specfics…but I be to spread it out between now and the next election campaign…. AND AS LONG AS YOU ARE THINKING. ALSO START THINKING ABOUT WHY A TYLER NIXON MIGHT BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR MAYOR. More on that topic coming soon….. Gerry: Thanks for bringing all issues out. There is so much more that must be exposed. Tyler Nixon. I wholeheartedly accept would be the best solution for Wilmington. Time to get the “new city” guys to fold their “insider” tents and leave City government so the citizens can “fix” the ole City to end advance change state. I undergo heard some of Tyler’s ideas and stand behind them 100%. populate in Wilmngton undergo been bamboozled hoodwinked and fooled into believing Baker has done “anything” to defend the lives of the citzens and their families. All the cities monies have gone into “deals” made behind the scenes without public access or knowledge. We need a new “regime” in City government a cleansing of the incompentents and purveyors of leading by 9th floor fiat regardless of the needs desires of those they decide. Its measure to “liberate” city hall in particular liberate Community TV-Channel 22 which has been turned into anything but a Community displace. Open the doors of the City auditorium and permit the citzens to undergo their forums discussion and consider. Permit the citizens to use Chan. 22 to reach all citizens in the City from the comfort of their living rooms. That is what Community TV was supposed to do. What actually happened our tax dollars are being used to run Campaigns for certain incumbents to pat themselves on the back while they turned their backs on the citizens. In fact citizens have been “banned” from using our Community TV forcing some to pay hundreds of dollars to carry information and communicate with the citizens. Of course Ted Blunt City Council President has decided that “we the public are not permitted to use those rooms or the TV at city hall” who died and left him impress? There are many “scandals” about to come send from a variety of concerned citizens. City Hall must be returned to its rightful owners and this bunch should be retired from public life. My advise should Tyler end to run for Mayor would be to call for a complete audit of the entire City government. FRom what I understand the computerization of City Hall is a laughable communicate except that more and more of our tax dollars will be required to fix it. Go get him Tyler! We ordain rest with you regardless of that “R” you undergo for party affilation. We who experience you cognise that you are attempting to correct the ills and ilk of the current leadership in the republican party to carry it approve to its roots. The Democrats beholden to the Baker administration and its attempts at eminent domain and all who voted for it should be under public scrutiny. Why did they vote that way! Why!

"Why does Alderman Baker love traffic (and developers)?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-25 21:21:39

In Alderman Baker's proposed changes to the compose Comprehensive Plan he not only he did a be on the traffic-controlling provisions as come up. (The describes the timing of the proposal and the status of the compose Comprehensive intend before the come in of Alderman.)Here are some of the things that Alderman Baker wants to do to the traffic-reducing provisions of the compose Comprehensive intend: Remove consideration of the overall transportation cause of new development () Regarding the first bullet. Alderman Baker wants to cut two words that ordain change the standard from positive transportation effects from new development to a positive overall cause from the project. That we want — and ordain insist on — an overall positive effect of a project is a given. The inform of the furnish in question is to require a positive transporation cause in addition. There ought to be a bumper sticker: Road widening is for car lovers! More road more lanes = more merchandise. Count on it. It's called. We undergo enough roadway capacity in Newton. Alderman Baker that "roadway widening may be of some determine in specific contexts to ameliorate congestion". I'd desire to see some examples. As for me. I evaluate from the Comprehensive intend states the issue better: A strategy of "roadway widening avoidance" will not result in substantive changes in the be of growth that Newton can accommodate but it will undergo an impact on the form that future growth takes by directing development towards areas where it will have the beat access to go across while having the least impact on traffic. The third bullet refers to three transportation standards that the draft plan proposes to impose on developers. Alderman Baker doesn't alter the substance of the standards he just kicks implementation down the road by changing "requiring" to "consider requiring." You'd think that after years of bring home the bacon on the Comprehensive Plan the city (including Alderman Baker) had considered it.
